The VOLCANO SAND FILTER is a continuously backwashing filter which eliminates the need to shut down for backwash like conventional sand filters. Feed water containing contaminants flows downward through coarse, intermediate, and fine sand-media. The contaminants are captured, and the purified water leaves the filter as filtrate. The air lift transports the contaminated sand to the top of the filter where it is cleaned in the washbox. The contaminants are then removed via the reject stream. The cleaned sand falls back to the sand bed and classifies into coarse, intermediate and fine media layers. The process is continuous.
